New Motivation…

December 29

I traveled to my home country for three weeks and returned energized to paint but have been having a hard time writing about it. My efforts at preserving “Africa time” have consisted of painting, painting and yet more painting from the many photographs I took in South Africa. Now I have a different motivation behind my paintings; a motivation currently in the “brain dump” stage. That being said I recently decided not to make heavy weather of writing about my artistic endeavors.

The weekend after Thanksgiving I returned to Denver which was soon smothered by a bitterly cold arctic weather front…perfect for hiding out at home to tackle this elephant. This calf meandered powerfully in front of the rugged outdoor vehicle I was traveling in on my one-day safari. Call me crazy, but I think he was smiling and perhaps even winking at me when I photographed him. Unfortunately I failed to preserve his “grin and wink” since I cropped part of his face. Being surrounded by herds of elephants was the icing on the cake to top off an already fantastic, full trip.

A few weeks prior to this safari, my South African adventure took me to Plettenberg Bay to stay with an old friend who runs an English country guest house. Sheila is an avid painter and our lazy Sunday afternoon lunch revolved around talk of our mutual hobby. Sheila’s house is filled with paintings completed by other people, and she asked me to send her one of mine to add to her collection.

My two attempts to capture the back of her house and pool area were completed from photographs taken at only slightly different angles. I completed them on different days which might explain their different “moods.” Which do I prefer and why? The second. The colors and atmosphere are more inviting than the coolness and off-kilter perspective of my first rendition. I plan on sending Sheila both paintings and will keep the photos for future use now that I have a new project up my sleeve.
